Many professionals believe that sexual exploitation of minors doesn’t take place in their immediate circles. Only when they become aware that this is not true can they be in a position to spot the signs and do something about it. Personal stories are an effective way of breaking down prejudices and raising awareness. See Me Now confronts professionals with these stories, with the aim of making them aware of the problems of sexual exploitation. The See Me Now platform also offers scope for action: here, professionals can find a list of signs, ask questions in an automated chat and be led to a care coordinator or CoMensha (Coordination Centre Against Human Trafficking).

Long Description

It is estimated that some 1,320 underage girls become a victim of sexual exploitation every year in the Netherlands. Only 11% of these are reported as victims. This estimate ignores male victims, even though it is suspected that their number is as high, if not even higher.

It is important that victims are recognised by those around them so that a report can be made, and they can then be helped. Following such a report, a process will commence in which victims can be provided with care and assistance. However, recognising the signs of the sexual exploitation of minors has proved not to be easy. Many professionals believe that this does not occur in their immediate circles. Only when they become aware that this is not true can they recognise the signs of this form of human trafficking and do something about it.

True personal stories are an effective means of creating awareness and breaking through prejudice. This is why sharing these stories is a method used by the care coordinators. These 16 coordinators organise care for the victims of human trafficking in the Netherlands, together with CoMensha. To make the problem visible to various groups of professionals, they confront them with victims’ personal stories. Following each information meeting, the number of reports of (potential) victims increases significantly.

See Me Now uses these stories in a similar way, to make it clear to professionals that the problem of sexual exploitation of minors also occurs in their immediate (professional) circles. Young people tell their stories in the form of video messages. These stories break through prejudice, because: the victims are (often) boys; the victims are not necessarily uneducated; this problem also occurs in villages in the provinces, not just in the big cities; etc.

Once the professionals’ prejudices have been broken down, they will be better able to spot the signs. Alongside space for the video messages, the See Me Now platform offers an opportunity for action: here, the professional will find a list of signs, s/he can ask questions in an automated chat and if there are concrete suspicions be led to the right care coordinator or CoMensha. In this way, See Me Now seeks to offer an accessible platform for reporting (suspicions of) the sexual exploitation of minors.

In the first instance, See Me Now focuses on teachers owing to their presence in the immediate vicinity of (potential) victims. At the same time, however, this group is difficult to reach: out of fear of getting a bad reputation, educational establishments respond discouragingly because they wish to avoid any suggestion that this problem is present at their school. Recognising that teachers are under a lot of pressure, we do not expect See Me Now to require a lot from them. Every group of professionals will be approached with a tailor-made campaign, offering the possibility to make use of highly targeted communications channels. We will reach teachers through a campaign of highly targeted advertisements on social media; the dissemination of communications resources in schools; and placing advertisements in professional journals and other relevant media that reaches the education sector.

See Me Now breaks down prejudices, helps professionals recognise signs and puts them in touch with CoMensha or their local care coordinator. This leads to more reports, and consequently more care for victims.

Veel professionals denken dat seksuele uitbuiting van minderjarigen niet in hun directe omgeving voorkomt. Pas wanneer zij zich bewust zijn dat het tegendeel waar is, kunnen zij de signalen herkennen en iets doen.
Persoonlijke verhalen vormen een effectief middel om vooroordelen te doorbreken en bewustwording te creëren. See Me Now confronteert professionals met deze verhalen met het doel hen bewust te maken van de problematiek van seksuele uitbuiting.
Het platform See Me Now biedt daarnaast ruimte voor actie: de professional vindt hier een signalenlijst, kan in een geautomatiseerde chat vragen stellen en wordt geleid naar een zorgcoördinator of CoMensha.

Naar schatting zijn er in Nederland zo’n 1.320 minderjarige meisjes per jaar slachtoffer van seksuele uitbuiting. Slechts 11% daarvan wordt gemeld als slachtoffer. Deze schatting laat de mannelijke slachtoffers buiten beeld, terwijl er vermoedens zijn dat dit aantal minstens even hoog is.

Het is belangrijk dat slachtoffers worden opgemerkt door hun omgeving, zodat zij deze persoon kunnen melden en daarmee helpen. Na een melding start een traject waarin slachtoffers zorg en hulp wordt verleend. Het herkennen van signalen van seksuele uitbuiting van minderjarigen blijkt echter niet eenvoudig. Veel professionals denken dat dit niet in hun directe omgeving voorkomt. Pas wanneer zij zich bewust zijn dat het tegendeel waar is, kunnen zij de signalen van deze vorm van mensenhandel herkennen en iets ondernemen.

Waargebeurde en persoonlijke verhalen vormen een effectief middel om bewustwording te creëren en vooroordelen te doorbreken. Vandaar dat het delen van deze verhalen een methode is die ingezet wordt door de zorgcoördinatoren. Deze 16 coördinatoren organiseren in Nederland, samen met CoMensha, de zorg voor slachtoffers van mensenhandel. Om het probleem zichtbaar te maken voor verschillende groepen professionals, confronteren zij met persoonlijke verhalen van slachtoffers. Na iedere voorlichtingsbijeenkomst neemt het aantal meldingen van (mogelijke) slachtoffers significant toe.

See Me Now gebruikt op vergelijkbare wijze deze verhalen om professionals duidelijk te maken dat het probleem van seksuele uitbuiting van minderjarigen ook in hun directe (werk)omgeving voorkomt. Door middel van videoboodschappen vertellen jongeren hun verhaal. Deze verhalen doorbreken vooroordelen, want: jongens zijn ook (vaak) slachtoffer; slachtoffers zijn niet per definitie lager opgeleid; dit probleem komt óók in provinciedorpen voor en niet alleen in de Randstad; etc.

Wanneer de vooroordelen van professionals worden doorbroken, zullen zij beter in staat zijn signalen te herkennen. Naast ruimte voor de videoboodschappen biedt het platform See Me Now gelegenheid tot actie: de professional vindt hier een signalenlijst, kan in een geautomatiseerde chat vragen stellen en wordt geleid naar de juiste zorgcoördinator of CoMensha wanneer er concrete vermoedens zijn. Op deze manier wil See Me Now een toegankelijk platform bieden voor het melden van (vermoedens van) seksuele uitbuiting onder minderjarigen.

In eerste instantie richt See Me Now zich op docenten, gezien hun aanwezigheid in de directe omgeving van (mogelijke) slachtoffers. Tegelijkertijd is deze groep juist moeilijk te bereiken: onderwijsinstellingen reageren afwijzend omdat iedere suggestie dat deze problematiek op hun school speelt, vermeden dient te worden uit angst voor een slechte naam. Ondanks dat de druk op docenten groot is, verwachten wij dat See Me Now niet te veel van hen vraagt. Iedere groep professionals zal worden benaderd met een toegesneden campagne, wat de mogelijkheid biedt om zeer gerichte communicatiekanalen in te zetten. Docenten bereiken we met een campagne via zeer gerichte advertenties op sociale media; communicatiemiddelen verspreid op scholen; advertenties in vakbladen en andere relevante media om het onderwijs te bereiken.

See Me Now doorbreekt vooroordelen, helpt professionals bij het herkennen van signalen en brengt hen in contact met CoMensha of de zorgcoördinator in de buurt. Dit leidt tot meer meldingen en daarmee meer zorg voor slachtoffers.
